“Massive thank you to Octagon Theatre for hosting us this week and to the people and groups that have helped us begin to develop this important & fascinating project!”
Our Residency
We are doing a residency in Bolton this February about the Battle of Bamber Bridge.
To inform our research and development week, we would like to speak to local people with insights into or knowledge of the events. This could be someone who used to hear relatives talk about it or a historian with a local interest, we would like to hear from everyone who would like to share.
The dates of our residency in Bolton are 20 to 24 February 2023, working with and supported by Bolton’s Octagon Theatre.
The Battle of Bamber Bridge
What we understand about the event so far:
The United States sent many military units to the UK during the Second World War and they lived and worked alongside the British Population. The 1511th Quartermasters Truck Regiment was stationed in Bamber Bridge in Lancashire in 1943 and consisted predominantly of Black GIs.
Whilst welcomed by the locals, the Black troops came from a still largely segregated society and tensions over this led to them clashing with white US military Police stationed nearby and what ensued was known as The Battle of Bamber Bridge.
Our bookshop is currently closed whilst we’re unable to access our stock. We hope to be back up and running again soon.
